2019 Foiling Awards and MP eFoiler Challenge winners named
Milan, Italy (February 21, 2020) – The most innovative tech on the water was honoured at the 2019 Foiling Awards held February 20. As Foiling Week’s Sustainability Partner, Torqeedo was proud to present the Motorboat and Sustainability Awards, as well as the winner of the Multi-Purpose eFoiler Design Challenge in partnership with Gurit.
Foiling is not only revolutionizing racing sailing – it transforming mainstream boating as well, making boats much more efficient and environmentally friendly. When the Candela Seven speedboat is flying on its foils, energy consumption drops by 50 per cent, giving it a range similar to a combustion-powered boat of the same size. A highly specialized custom Deep Blue 50i motor and battery system drives the Candela Seven. Digitally controlled electric motors are the perfect fit for the computer-controlled flight system , which keeps the boat stable. Alex Thomson Sailing won the Sustainability Award for their plan to sail the Vendée Globe round-the-world solo regatta in a solar-electric IMOCA 60 yacht.
The MP eFoiler design competition aimed to inspire the creation of a revolutionary electric hydrofoil concept and to encourage and promote energy-efficient passenger transportation using eco-friendly electric engines and hydrofoils.
