Singapore deliveries: the Malacca Strait, done properly

Almost every yacht delivery into or out of Singapore runs the length of the Malacca Strait, which is the busiest shipping lane in the region and a coast of fishing fleets, unlit craft and afternoon squalls. It is not difficult water, but it rewards a crew that keeps a real two-watch system, plans the stops, and knows how Singapore’s arrival and departure procedures work. Our crew is based on this coast, delivers between Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand every season, and handles the port clearances, crew visas and marina bookings so the owner’s part is a daily report and a handover.

Routes we deliver through Singapore

Passage Distance Typical passage time Notes
Singapore to Phuket about 500 nm four to six days with stops at Port Dickson, Penang or Langkawi the usual October–November season run; Malaysian clearances en route, Thai inward clearance at Phuket
Phuket or Langkawi to Singapore about 400–500 nm three to six days common after a sale or for a yard period; Singapore Immigration Anchorage arrival
Singapore to Port Dickson, Penang or Langkawi 150–400 nm one to four days Malacca Strait traffic separation scheme the whole way
Singapore to Batam, Bintan or the Riau islands 20–60 nm one day Indonesian clearance; often part of a longer Indonesian delivery
Singapore to Kota Kinabalu, Hong Kong, Bali or Darwin 700–1,500 nm quoted per passage pre-departure inspection and spares kit become the main part of the job

Distances are approximate, between the usual marinas; the quote fixes the plan. Every delivery carries live tracking and a daily owner’s report.

Marinas and berths

We deliver to and from ONE°15 Marina at Sentosa Cove, Raffles Marina and the Marina at Keppel Bay, and to the yards and shipping berths used when a boat is being lifted onto a transport vessel. If the delivery ends at a ship rather than a marina, we coordinate the handover with the shipping line’s agent and present the boat ready for loading.

Season and weather

Singapore and the southern Malacca Strait are workable all year. The north-east monsoon, November to March, gives the smoothest passages north towards Thailand; the south-west monsoon, May to September, brings afternoon squalls, the Sumatra squall lines from the west, and more swell on the open Andaman stretch north of Langkawi. We plan around weather windows rather than the calendar, which is why passage times in the table are ranges.

Formalities

Singapore arrivals and departures go through the Immigration Anchorage with the port’s own pre-arrival notification, and a yacht in transit through Malaysia clears at each port of call: harbour master, immigration and customs. Thailand at the far end has its own immigration, customs and Harbour Department sequence. We arrange the crew’s visas, make the notifications, carry the ship’s papers and tell you before departure what the boat needs on board. Procedures change, so we confirm each one with the port at the time rather than publish a checklist that may be out of date.

What is included

Two licensed captains who are also licensed engineers; a Designated Person Ashore for the passage; pre-departure inspection and servicing with a spares kit from our own stock; live tracking and a daily report; crew visas, port clearances and customs handled; delivery insurance arranged; and a written report with photographs at handover. Fuel, marina fees and crew travel are passed on at cost with receipts. The yacht delivery cost guide explains how a quote is built.
