Why Langkawi deliveries need a crew that knows both sides of the border
Langkawi sits one long passage south of Phuket, and most boats that pass through it are either leaving Thailand at the end of a season, arriving in Southeast Asia from the Indian Ocean, or being moved between a sale in one country and an owner in the other. A delivery here is as much about paperwork as seamanship: a Thai departure, a Malaysian arrival, the duty-free status of the island itself, and the marina you are heading for all have their own sequence. Our crew lives and works on this coast, holds the licences and the Designated Person Ashore arrangement a managed yacht expects, and has done the Phuket–Langkawi run in both directions and in both monsoons. You get the boat where it needs to be, with the formalities done in the right order and a written report at the end.
Routes we deliver through Langkawi
| Passage | Distance | Typical passage time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phuket (Chalong / Ao Po / Yacht Haven) to Langkawi (Kuah, Rebak, Telaga) | about 120–130 nm | one overnight, or two days with a stop at Koh Lipe or Tarutao | Thai outward clearance at Phuket; Malaysian inward clearance on arrival |
| Langkawi to Penang (Straits Quay) | about 60 nm | one day | coastal, well-charted, fishing traffic at night |
| Langkawi to Port Dickson (Admiral Marina) | about 250 nm | two to three days | Malacca Strait traffic separation scheme; the crew keeps a two-watch system throughout |
| Langkawi to Singapore (ONE°15, Raffles Marina, Keppel Bay) | about 400 nm | three to five days with stops | Singapore arrival through the Immigration Anchorage; port clearance and crew visas handled before departure |
| Langkawi to Phuket for the Andaman season | about 120–130 nm | one overnight | the November repositioning run; book early for the season start |
| Langkawi outbound: Sri Lanka, Maldives, Chagos, Red Sea | 1,000 nm and up | quoted per passage | pre-departure inspection and spares kit become the main part of the job |
Distances are approximate, measured between the usual departure and arrival marinas; the quote fixes the plan. Every delivery carries live tracking so the owner can follow the boat, and a daily report by email or WhatsApp.
Season and weather
The west coast of the peninsula and the Andaman have two seasons. From November to April the north-east monsoon gives settled weather, light winds and flat water, and the Phuket–Langkawi run is routine in either direction. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings squalls and a swell onto the exposed coast; the passage is still made, but it is planned around weather windows and takes longer. Deliveries into Phuket cluster in October and November as boats return for the season, and deliveries out of Thailand cluster in April and May. If you want a specific week in those months, book ahead.
Formalities on a Langkawi delivery
Leaving Thailand, the boat and crew clear out through immigration, customs and the Harbour Department at the departure port. Arriving in Malaysia, the sequence is harbour master, immigration and customs; Langkawi’s duty-free status makes it the easiest Malaysian port of entry for a yacht. Going south, Singapore has its own arrival procedure through the Immigration Anchorage, and crew visas for the delivery team are arranged in advance. We handle the crew’s own visas and the boat’s clearances as part of the delivery, and we tell you before departure exactly which documents the boat needs on board. Rules change, so we confirm the current procedure with the port on each delivery rather than publishing a checklist that may be out of date.
What is included
Two licensed captains who are also licensed engineers, so the boat keeps a proper watch and the engineering is covered at sea; a Designated Person Ashore for the passage; a pre-departure inspection and servicing with a spares kit from our own stock; live tracking and a daily owner’s report; crew visas, port clearances and customs handled; delivery insurance arranged; and a full written report with photographs at handover. Expenses such as fuel, marina fees and the crew’s travel are passed on at cost with receipts. The yacht delivery cost guide explains how the quote is built.
Boats we move
Sailing yachts and catamarans from about 35 ft, motor yachts and sportfishers, and larger vessels where the owner wants a captain-engineer pair rather than a single skipper. Both crew have command and chief-engineer time on vessels over 40 m. If the boat has been laid up, the pre-departure inspection is where a delivery either starts well or does not, and it is included.
Foire aux questions
How long does a yacht delivery from Phuket to Langkawi take?
About 120 to 130 nautical miles, which is one overnight passage in settled weather, or two days with a stop at Koh Lipe or Tarutao. Allow a day each end for clearances.
Can you deliver a boat I have just bought in Langkawi to Thailand?
Yes. This is one of the most common jobs on this coast. We collect the boat from the marina, inspect and prepare it, clear out of Malaysia, deliver to Phuket and clear in, and hand over with a written report. If the boat needs work before it can sail, we tell you before we leave.
Do you deliver from Langkawi to Singapore?
Yes, about 400 nautical miles down the Malacca Strait, three to five days depending on stops and weather, with Singapore’s arrival procedure and crew visas arranged before departure.
What does a Langkawi delivery cost?
A written quote within one working day, built from a daily team rate plus expenses at cost with receipts. Tell us the boat, the two ports and the earliest date and we will quote it.
Do you provide a delivery skipper or a full crew?
Always two: a captain and an engineer who are each licensed for both roles. That is what lets the boat keep a watch at night and still have someone to fix a problem.
Can the owner come along?
Yes, as owner or guest. Many owners join the Phuket–Langkawi leg and leave the longer passages to us.
