Which Oil for Your Outboard? TC-W3, FC-W and the Liqui Moly Marine Grades Explained for Thailand

Every outboard handbook answers the oil question in one line, and almost nobody reads it. The line names a standard — NMMA FC-W for four-strokes, NMMA TC-W3 for two-strokes — and a viscosity. Match those two things and you have the right oil; ignore them and you are guessing with an engine that costs more than the boat it hangs on. This guide walks through what the standards mean, which Liqui Moly Marine grade carries which approval, and what changes when the engine spends its life in 30-degree water off Phuket, Krabi or Samui rather than a Norwegian fjord.

Two-stroke or four-stroke: the first fork

A two-stroke outboard burns its oil. It is either premixed into the petrol at the ratio the handbook specifies (richer during break-in on many engines) or fed from a separate tank by an autolube pump. Because the oil goes through the combustion chamber, the standard that matters is NMMA TC-W3 — a specification written for water-cooled two-stroke outboards that tests for piston cleanliness, ring sticking, lubricity and, critically, low ash so it does not foul plugs and ports. Car two-stroke oils and chainsaw oils are formulated for air-cooled engines running hotter; they are not a substitute.

A four-stroke outboard keeps its oil in a sump, like a car, and changes it on a schedule. Here the standard is NMMA FC-W (Four-Cycle Water-cooled), which adds tests a car oil never sees: rust protection in a salt-fog cabinet, corrosion resistance with water in the oil, and shear stability for an engine that spends hours at high load. An FC-W “Catalyst Compatible” oil is additionally formulated for outboards with catalytic converters. If your handbook says FC-W, a car oil of the same viscosity does not satisfy it.

What the Liqui Moly Marine range carries

Liqui Moly prints its approvals and manufacturer recommendations on each label and on the product data sheet. These are the ones that matter for outboards, jet skis and sterndrives — check them against your own handbook rather than taking a general rule.

10W-30 or 25W-40 for a four-stroke?

Most modern four-stroke outboards from Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Mercury and Tohatsu specify 10W-30 as the primary grade, and that is the one to use unless your handbook says otherwise — the engine’s clearances and oil pump were designed around it. 25W-40 is the grade many sterndrive and inboard petrol engines call for (MerCruiser and Volvo Penta among them), and some outboard makers list it as an alternative in sustained hot conditions. The trap in Thailand is to assume “hotter climate, thicker oil” and go to 25W-40 on an engine that specifies 10W-30; the first number is cold-start flow, and a 10W oil still protects perfectly well at 35 °C ambient. Follow the handbook, and if it lists both, either is correct.

Direct-injection two-strokes are a special case

Evinrude E-TEC, Mercury OptiMax and other direct-injection two-strokes meter oil precisely and run leaner and hotter than a carburettor engine. Their makers specify a DFI-rated TC-W3 oil, and the difference is real: a DFI oil is formulated for the higher combustion temperatures and the low oil-to-fuel ratios those engines run. Liqui Moly’s Marine 2T DFI is the grade the company lists for E-TEC and Mercury DFI engines; standard Marine 2T is fine for everything with a carburettor or a conventional autolube system.

What tropical water changes

Nothing about the choice of standard — FC-W and TC-W3 are the same in Trang as in Trondheim — but three things about how you run it. First, change intervals: manufacturers publish hours-or-months intervals, and in Thailand it is the months that catch people out, because an engine used every weekend and one that sits at a mooring through the southwest monsoon both hit the calendar limit long before the hour limit. Second, water in the lower unit: warm salt water and long idle periods are exactly the conditions in which a tired prop-shaft seal lets water into the gearcase, so drain and inspect gear oil at the interval the handbook gives and use a water-tolerant grade such as the 85W-90 if milky oil has ever appeared. Third, storage: an engine laid up for the monsoon needs the fuel system stabilised and the cylinders fogged — the subject of our companion guide on fuel and lay-up.

How much oil, gear oil and stabiliser do you need?

The handbook figure is the one that counts, and it is larger when the filter is changed at the same time: a Yamaha F150 takes 4.5 L of engine oil with the filter and 0.98 L of gear oil, an F40 1.7 L and 0.44 L, an F300 V6 6.3 L and 1.51 L. Round up to the next pack and keep the remainder for top-ups — an engine that is checked at every outing uses a little between services. For fuel, Liqui Moly rates its Marine Fuel Stabiliser at 500 ml per 100 L of petrol (one 25 ml dosage chamber per 5 L), so a 150 L tank laid up for the monsoon wants two bottles. Our Outboard Service Kit Builder holds the quantities for 36 Yamaha four-strokes, picks the cheapest pack combination at the grade your handbook allows and puts the whole kit in your cart in one click.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Can I use car engine oil in a four-stroke outboard?

Not if the handbook specifies NMMA FC-W. FC-W adds rust, corrosion and shear tests that car oils are not required to pass, because an outboard runs at sustained high load in a salt environment. Use an FC-W oil in the viscosity the handbook gives.

What does TC-W3 mean?

TC-W3 is the NMMA standard for oils used in water-cooled two-stroke outboards, covering lubricity, piston and ring cleanliness and low ash. Two-stroke outboard makers specify it for both premix and autolube engines; direct-injection engines additionally need a DFI-rated TC-W3 oil.

Which Liqui Moly oil for a Yamaha four-stroke outboard in Thailand?

Liqui Moly lists Yamaha among the makers for its Marine 4T Motor Oil 10W-30 (NMMA FC-W Catalyst Compatible). Confirm the viscosity in your handbook; use 25W-40 only where it is specified.

How often should I change outboard gear oil in tropical water?

At the interval in the handbook — makers give an hours-or-months figure — and sooner if the drained oil is milky, which means water has entered past a seal. Marine Gear Oil GL4/GL5 80W-90 is the standard grade; the 85W-90 High Performance grade is formulated to keep protecting with water contamination.
